Dress Code Update

We have had a great beginning of the school year with teachers and students both working very hard in the learning process. As we continue this work, we want to remind all parents and guardians that safety is Lewis and Clark’s and the Yakima School District’s top priority. Therefore, we are asking parents to check their child’s attire before they leave for school. We have been working with the Yakima Police Department (YPD) /School Resource Officers (SRO) who have been in contact with the YPD Gang Unit to stay aware of any new clothing articles that could put your child’s safety and well being at risk. We will not be allowing:

  • Shirts and pants that say “G-unit” or “Southpole.”
  • Solid red or blue shirts
  • Shoelaces that are any color except for black and white.
  • Pants that are more than two sizes to big.
  • Shirts and jersey’s with numbers on them.
  • Web belts.
  • “Player 69” attire
  • Old English lettering

The attire that is not acceptable may be changing throughout the year so we will update these changes as we learn about them. Parents are encouraged to not buy clothing articles with the letter N (with the color red) or S (with the color blue) on them. There will be parent gang awareness presentations put on by the SRO’s throughout the year that will help inform parents of the latest gang issues. The dates will be announced in a future newsletter. Again, thank you for helping us ensure a safe and healthy learning and teaching environment for all students and staff.

Our four R's

Rigor: Skills and/or knowledge are manifested as participants develop conceptual understanding, not recall.

Reflection: Thinking is evident because leaders provide opportunities for participants to respond to open-ended questions, explain their thinking processes, and reflect to create personal meaning.

Relevance: Application of skills, knowledge, and thinking in relevant and/or real-world contexts is essential for engaging participants in their learning and for helping participants make connections that lead to understanding.

Relationships: Relationships are positive and are essential for establishing optimal conditions for learning and include high expectations around challenging work, student social support for learning, and differentiation of instruction based on participant needs.

Nine Characteristics of Highly Performing Schools Goal:

Increase to an 80% agreement level the perception of parents, students and staff of Lewis & Clark Middle School that there is truly a supportive learning environment in our school as measures against the standards of this characteristic by surveys of all educational partners, by June 2004.
