A.C. We will run onto the mat. We will relentlessly push the action. We will run off the mat. We will be winners. Six hard minutes of wrestling will be nothing because we train to wrestle ten. The score during the match will mean nothing because we already know the outcome. No team can match our conditioning and training, our mental toughness, our desire to succeed.
PHILOSOPHY:
The Davis Wrestling Staff is committed to providing a program that stresses competitiveness, sportsmanship, and mental toughness. We expect our wrestlers to represent themselves, their team, their school, and their community in a positive and exemplary manner. The program will provide a fun and supportive atmosphere, but we also expect our wrestlers to be motivated individuals who are dedicated to achieving their greatest potential as a wrestler in the Davis Pirate Wrestling Program.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible to wrestle for the Davis Pirates, a wrestler must complete all paperwork required by the district and pay all fees necessary before turning out for the team. Wrestlers will be eligible to compete in duel meets if they are in school the entire day of a match. Also, any absences must be excused. Even then, you may have no more than three. Wrestlers cannot compete for the following reasons: . Missing a practice the day before a match without a coach's approval . A wrestler under disciplinary action .
Failing to maintain satisfactory academic status
. A wrestler that was unable to continue in practice due to an injury' . A wrestler excluded from practice due to unsatisfactory
practice behavior. Failing
to adhere to established weight control guidelines . Failure to make weight for a duel meet
PRACTICES: Practices
are important in developing successful wrestlers. All wrestlers are
expected to be in the practice room on time and ready to participate
( The first practice is November 15th. A schedule of the practices is included in the handbook. We will make an attempt to allow time off around the holidays. Practice
starts at Wrestlers are encouraged to come to practice with a good work ethic. We are committed to providing each wrestler with the best opportunity to be successful, and our practice sessions have been designed accordingly. Coaches will stress hard work and attitude necessary to be successful. If, in the opinion of a coach, your participation is less than acceptable, you may be asked to leave practice. You may return to the team at the next practice session. We are trying to build an attitude and work ethic in our wrestlers that can only be achieved through continuous hard work in the practice room. It is essential that proper behavior be adhered to. Wrestlers need to be aware that inappropriate language and disrespectful behavior will be dealt with immediately. TRAINING RULES: It is important that all wrestlers take care of themselves throughout the season. Rest is necessary to compete at the peak of performance. Diet is important and weight- loss is an issue in wrestling. Meals should be eaten in moderation and consist of high carbohydrate food. Wrestlers watching their weight should not eat salad or diet foods. These foods do not contain energy necessary for an individual to compete at this sport. Wrestlers should refrain from eating potato chips, com chips, candy, popcorn, or any snack food that does not contain fruits or grains. No carbonated beverages. You need to drink fruit juices and at least 48 oz. of water a day. High school athletic rules will be strictly enforced. According to school, team, and health/fitness guidelines, the consumption of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited. CHALLENGES: A wrestler's position on the team will be determined by a challenge system. Any wrestler may challenge another for his position in the line-up provided that he is within two pounds of that weight class the day of challenge match. Once the varsity line-up is established, a challenger must defeat the varsity wrestler twice in . order to replace them in the line-up. Anyone challenging a B-team wrestler for a particular weight class is not required to win twice to take over that position as the backup. Similarly, B-team wrestlers are not required to challenge to be eligible to wrestle in junior varsity matches or junior varsity tournaments. The coaching staff reserves the right to select wrestlers for duel meets and tournaments, contrary to the challenge system. These decisions are done to provide the greatest degree of safety and success for our wrestlers. WEIGHT-LOSS: The coaching staff will recommend that a wrestler compete in a particular weight class, given their normal weight and amount of body tissue. A doctor will certify your minimum weight just prior to winter vacation. You must be near your intended post- season weight class at this time. We do not penalize a wrestler who does not wrestle at a suggested weight class. However, parents and wrestlers need to be aware that the competition may be dropping weight and at times be naturally bigger and stronger. If a wrestler commits to a weight class, then they are expected to maintain a weight that is within the legal requirement to compete. Wrestlers missing weight twice in a season will be moved to a backup position at the next higher weight. We will not move wrestlers missing weight to a higher weight in order for them to compete. This is not in the best interest of the team and is unfair to those that have met the expectations. All wrestlers are expected to travel as a group. We will
depart Everyone is expected to be on time for home matches. Competing wrestlers are required to remain in the area of the bench or warm-up mats during the duel meet. Wrestlers are not allowed in the bleachers or outside near the concession area. Likewise, unless you are assigned a specific task requiring you to sit on the bench with the team, you will sit in the stands. Family and friends must also remain in the stands. Wrestlers are discouraged from eating in the bench area. Any wrestler not competing at that home match is expected to assist with the operation of the match. If a wrestler is not given a duty, he is to be seated close to the mat to support his teammates. Friends and family are not allowed in the bench area .during a duel meet or on the floor during tournaments. All wrestlers will be, assigned a duty during the setup and breakdown of mats. If it is necessary to remind you of your duties or you are found to not be participating, you may miss the next match. Perhaps more than any other sport, wrestling requires we work together to prepare for home matches. This year we are purchasing t-shirts, shorts and equipment bags for each wrestler. Wrestlers are required to purchase their own socks (white, ankle high, no stripes), an athletic supporter, and we recommend a stocking cap to wear after practice and matches. The athletic fee is $32.00. QUITTING: We
never like to see anyone leave an athletic team. If for any reason
a wrestler feels that they can no longer participate, we would like
an opportunity to resolve the situation. If no solution can be found
to keep an individual with the team, then we would appreciate them
turning in their clean uniform in a timely fashion.
. . INJURIES: The school employs an outstanding athletic trainer: Chris Balm. He does a fine job treating injuries of athletes. We refer all injuries to him and follow his recommendation. Any wrestler injured will be evaluated by him and will only return to participation on his approval. Please understanding. this is the best thing for the athlete and follow his advice. Wrestlers that leave a practice due to injury will not be allowed to participate until they are released by the trainer and have participated in another practice to ensure they are ready to compete. LETTERING: How do you earn a letter? Each varsity match is worth 2 points. If you pin, you earn 1 additional point. Each B-team match is worth 1 point. If you pin your opponent, you will also earn the additional point. To earn a letter, you must earn 35 points. If you are close and only missed achieving your goal by a few points, you may earn 5 points by attending ALL practices. COACHES: The coaching staff consists of a head coach and two assistant coaches. Please feel free to contact any of the coaches with matters of concern. Any questions about the operations of the program need to be addressed by the head coach. Parents are an integral part of any program and we welcome your suggestions and support. Please realize, however, that the program's success or failure falls solely on the head coach and his assistants. We may not always agree on how things are done, but you. can rest assured that what we do is in the best interest of your athlete, the program, and the school. There is also an appropriate time to approach the staff with concerns and questions. General questions or comments are appropriate at the end the day's competition. Any conversations of a sensitive nature should be scheduled with the coach and held in private. Please understand and help us work with everyone involved to maintain a strong relationship.
