The BEAR Store opens on Tuesday this week, so get ready to spend your BEAR Bucks. Grades 1-5, look for the store in the cafeteria from 8:00-8:35 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Kindergarteners can shop during their afternoon recess. Count and organize your BEAR Bucks, and staple them into "books" of 5. Here's what we'll be selling:

Coming to school every day is the best thing you can do for yourself! If you miss a day of school, you miss 7 hours of new learning--whether no matter why you’re gone. It’s hard to catch back up, and students with just 1-2 absences each month really fall behind in reading and math.
What can you do? Take the Challenge 5 and Strive for 5 or fewer absences all year. Only stay home if you’re really sick. Here’s what you can earn by having excellent attendance at Roosevelt (click link for list daily, monthly, and end-of-year incentives).
You are invited to Roosevelt's Annual Title I Parent Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6-7 pm. Learn more about the Title 1 program at Roosevelt and provide input into the procedures for parent involvement, the school-parent-student compact, and the parent involvement budget and plan.
Heading into our 2nd week of school, you've probably started hearing your child talk about BEAR Bucks. What are BEAR Bucks? What can they be used for? BEAR Bucks are rewards that encourage students for following our BEAR Expectations--Be safe; Expect success, Act responsibly; and Respect all. BEAR Bucks can be spent in our BEAR Store, which sells school supplies and other fun items. The BEAR Store will open in mid/late September as soon as the Student Leadership Class Representatives are elected and trained. So, save your BEAR Bucks and keep earning more!

Thank you for a great year at Roosevelt. We are thankful for the support of community partners this year also, including Bud Clary Toyota, Salvation Army, the Well Church, On the Corner, McDonalds, and Fred Meyer.
We hope you are enjoying your summer, and we want to share a few important dates with you as you think about back-to-school.

The Yakima School District is proud to announce the hiring of Laura Harper to the position of Assistant Principal at Roosevelt Elementary School. Mrs. Harper replaces Nancy Smith who is now Principal.
Mrs. Harper began teaching in Texas in 1992. After she and her husband moved to Yakima twenty-five years ago, she worked as a teacher and instructional facilitator in the Toppenish School District for fifteen years. She also trained new elementary and middle school teachers through Heritage University’s HU Accelerate program. This year, Laura completed a year-long principal internship at Whitney Elementary School in Yakima.
During her career, Laura has mentored teachers, designed curriculum, led reform efforts, and was recognized as district Teacher of the Year. She presented at national and state conferences, and her writing has been published in professional journals and books. She has earned over $25,000 in grants.
Laura earned a bachelor's degree in English and history and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX; her bilingual and ELL endorsements from Heritage University in Toppenish, WA; and her principal certification from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA.
Laura and her husband, Ken, have been married for 25 years. They have a son who attends Franklin Middle School. When not at work, Laura enjoys walking her dog, canoeing, cooking, and reading. Laura has known that she wanted to be a teacher since elementary school, when she was inspired by her own teachers. She is also inspired by the legacy of many generations of educators in her own family.
Laura says that Roosevelt has built a strong reputation during its 100-year history as a place with powerful learning, relationships, and support for all students. In fact, Laura already has her own history at Roosevelt: She and her husband sent their own child there, and Laura served on the board of the Roosevelt Booster Club for six years. Laura believes that the people—the staff members, students, and parents—make Roosevelt great, so she is excited to rejoin the Roosevelt team.
The Yakima School District is working with Performance Fact, Inc. to develop a new strategic plan for the district.
The process launched on September 16, 2019, with student voice sessions that engaged over 100 students.
In addition to the student voice session, stakeholders will be engaged through the core planning team, the alignment team, school board sessions, and community forums. The process will conclude in early 2020.
We invite you to attend community forums to share your voice in the process.
Community Forums will be held from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm on:
October 14 (Davis Commons)
October 15 (IKE Commons) Free dinner from 5-6pm!
and November 18 (en Espanol -Washington Middle School) Free dinner from 5-6pm!
The same content will be presented at all three sessions. They are all open to the public. Dinner will be served from 5-6pm. Translation will be available. Activities for young children will be available. School-aged students are encouraged to participate.

The High School and Beyond Plan process is a graduation requirement that supports students in exploring their interests, planning high school coursework that is aligned to those interests, keeping track of major assessment scores, and logging work and other relevant experience. The Plan is designed to enable students to successfully pursue education or training after they graduate high school. https://readywa.org/beyond/en/
In 2018, 79.5% of students graduated in four years. This is up from 72.5% in 2017, 73.5% in 2016, 65.3% in 2015 and 63.2% in 2014. The average graduation rate in Washington State in 2018 was 80.9%. Further, Davis High School and Eisenhower High School saw rates far above the state average of 80.9% in 2018 with 88.7% and 84.8% respectively.
