Yakima School District is offering two opportunities for teachers and administrators seeking to improve their Spanish while learning important skills for working with ELL students. Attendees will receive clock hours, and those who complete the course will be given access to Rosetta Stone through the summer. Timesheets are not available for this opportunity. Access to Rosetta Stone requires attendance at ALL sessions and a commitment to regular usage.
Spanish for Conferences - This course teaches functional language for teachers and administrators with limited Spanish proficiency to use during conferences. Expert Spanish teacher, Ana Estrada, from La Casa Hogar will guide participants through an exploration of language. The course will cover greetings, high utility vocabulary and phrases, asking and answering questions, how to respond when you get stuck, cultural competency, and how to use an interpreter. Participants will develop their own script of useful Spanish language structures that will give them confidence while interacting with parents and families, and help families feel welcomed, honored, and understood. The course will also include authentic interaction with native Spanish speakers from the community. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, February 6, 13, 27, March 6, 13, 20 from 4:00-5:30 pm at the PDC.
Spanish through the Language Enhancement Strategies - This course is for teachers and administrators with basic to intermediate Spanish proficiency. It will include designated Spanish language development from expert Spanish instructor Ana Estrada from La Casa Hogar, as well as content-based Spanish language acquisition using the six language enhancement strategies from project GLAD. Participants will experience the power of input charts, chants, the Sentence Patterning Chart, Learning Log, the Cooperative Strip Paragraph, and the Group Frame from a student’s perspective as they acquire language through both explicit instruction and integration of Spanish language into content. Classes will be held on Thursdays, February 1, 8, 22, March 1, 8, 15 from 4:00-5:30 at the PDC.
