  • Superintendent Greene Greets the Mavericks

Posted by Al Fischer on 5/11/2020

    Trevor Greene and Al Fischer

The McKinley Mavericks send their thanks to YSD Superintendent Trevor Greene.  Mr. Greene joined Mr. Fischer on his daily "Musical Moment" video, saying hi and even helping solve a riddle posed by a McKinley student.  He sent his appreciation to us... and we are sending it back to him.  Thanks for your work, Mr. Greene!

  • McKinley's Very Own Music Man

Posted by Amanda Voorhees on 4/2/2020

One question many parents, students and teachers have during this time of distance learning is "what does this look like for specialist teachers?"  Librarians, Physical Education Teachers, Reading Interventionists, English Language Teachers, and Music Teachers are looking for ways to continue to teach their content along side the ELA, Math, and Science Teachers.  McKinley Elementary is working on a plan to incoporate all specialists and here is an example of a recent music lesson, from their very own music man, Mr. Fischer!

District Announcements

  • Drive-In Graduation Events Canceled (5/26/20)

May 26, 2020, Yakima, WA - At this time, the Yakima School District regrets that we have canceled drive-in graduation events for Eisenhower, Davis, and Stanton.  In recent communications with the Yakima Health District and guidelines set forth by the governor, we have determined that any celebration, other than virtual, is highly unlikely. The District, in conjunction with high school leadership at Eisenhower, Davis, Stanton and Yakima Online, will not facilitate or support a drive-in or virtual watch party, due to the growing concern of the number of infections in Yakima County and our lingering Phase 1 reopening status.

While the district is still hopeful that a June 13 procession down Yakima Avenue to honor our graduates could happen, there are growing doubts, due to the status of Yakima County as a COVID-19 hotspot. This processional is something that we know our graduating seniors deserve but it may not be possible. We hope to provide updated information on the possibility of the June 13 processional on June 1.

Class of 2020 Seniors – please check your specific high school’s website for more graduation details.

  • June 17 is the last day of school for YSD students

According to guidance from OSPI, unless districts can show that student learning was NOT impacted by the emergency closures (either loss of instructional days, loss of instructional hours per day, or both) districts are required to add five (5) days at the end of the school year. For the Yakima School District, that means June 17th will be the final day of distance learning for the 2019-20 school year. Support will be available to students via distance learning through June 17.

  • Annual Survey Helps YSD Make Future Decisions: please participate

Each year, our school community provides feedback to YSD through a survey. It takes about 10 minutes and the information we receive helps to shape our decisions in the future.  The survey is open through May 31, 2020.  Please take the time to answer the survey. It is available in English and Spanish (once you click the link below).

  • COVID-19 - Moving Student Learning Forward Survey (take the survey weekly)

Our community and education leaders are doing their best to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Your perceptions will provide feedback to inform conversations and support improvement efforts. Data will be collected on an ongoing basis to track changes in people's perceptions. You are invited to complete the survey once per week. This is a free survey developed and administered by The Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) for the public good. All individual survey responses are confidential and anonymous.

  • Be Counted! 2020 Census

Census 2020 The census is a way for our community to seek the necessary financial support from the government that it needs.  Our schools depend on the census count for accurate program funding. In mid-March, you will receive an invitation to participate in the census from the Census Bureau. Be sure to count everyone in your household - even infants.  Responding to the census is the law, however, it is against the law for the Census Bureau to inquire about personal information such as immigration status.  It is illegal for the Census Bureau to pass on your contact information to other government entities. They use your contact info, such as your name and address, to know if you have already been counted. Once you have responded, you will no longer receive notices from the Census Bureau and a census worker will not come to your home.  If you have any questions, we have put together videos and information for you online at
